Conference Update

Posted on April 13th, 2017 by Kevin McGoff

Greetings!

We're looking forward to seeing you at this year's Carolina Dynamics Symposium! Please see below for some additional information about the conference.

Friday's talk

There will be a colloquium style talk by Nic Ormes (University of Denver) at 4pm on April 21st in Fretwell 128. This talk will be accessible to advanced undergraduates, and all are welcome to attend! Starting at 3pm we will have Tea and light refreshments in the Math Lounge (located on the 3rd floor of Fretwell).

Title: Directed Graphs, Symbolic Dynamics and the Nonnegative Inverse Eigenvalue Problem

Abstract: The Nonnegative Inverse Eigenvalue Problem (NIEP) asks for necessary and sufficient conditions for a list of complex numbers to be the eigenvalues of a matrix with nonnegative entries. This problem was posed in 1949 by H. R. Suleimanova and remains open today. In this talk we will discuss variants of this problem which have been solved in papers of Boyle-Handelman (1991) and Kim-Ormes-Roush (2000). The talk will focus on the connections between nonnegative matrices, directed graphs and symbolic dynamics which were critical to these results.

Full program

The full program containing all titles and abstracts will be published soon.

Banquet

The conference banquet will be held in room 112 of the Cone Center at 6pm on Saturday, April 22nd. If you plan to attend but did not rsvp "yes" in the conference registration form, then please let us know as soon as possible and not later than April 17th.

Parking

The closest parking facility to Fretwell is called East Deck 1. We recommend that you park in the visitor parking areas in that facility. Parking should be free on Saturday and Sunday, but you should expect to pay (daily max. is 6 dollars) on Friday.

Campus map

Here is a comprehensive campus map: http://facilities.uncc.edu/sites/facilities.uncc.edu/files/media/Maps/Uncc_Campus_Map.pdf

East Deck 1 is located in the lower right portion of the map. The talks will be held in Fretwell, which is labelled with "45" in red. The conference banquet will be held in the Cone Center, which is labelled with "5" in blue.

Carolina Dynamics Symposium 2014

Posted on January 11, 2014 by Donna Molinek

Colleagues - it is with great pleasure that I announce that this spring's meeting will take place at Davidson College April 25-27, 2014. As they become available, details will be announced on this website.

Thanks to a grant NSF DMS-1301581 obtained by Jane Hawkins, Predrag Punosevac, and Martin Schmoll we will be able to cover most local expenses for all participants along with travel expenses for those from the Carolinas.

All participants are invited to give a talk and those who are interested in doing so, should email Donna Molinek. The length of the talks will be determined once we know the number of speakers. The current plan is for the conference to begin Friday around 3:00, continue all day Saturday until early afternoon on Sunday.

The organizer for this year's conference is Donna Molinek at Davidson College - feel free to write anytime with questions.

Take care,
Donna

Last Minute Conference Announcements

If you want to put your car at the hotel and take a free shuttle any time during the day on Friday, just let the hotel know - they leave on the hour and require 20 minutes notice or so. Unfortunately they don't pick you up late at night but there will be people with cars available.

If you park in town near the campus, the parking lots on Rosemary street near the intersection with Columbia are good. There are about 4-5 of them. We can likely cover reasonable parking fees, but not parking tickets if you park illegally!!!!

On Saturday you need to put your car in a lot early to find a spot at all. Campus parking is free on weekends.

I recommend heading straight for N7 on this campus map: Campus Parking Map, but not on Friday before 5!! You can move your car from paid parking to here on Friday if you want stay in the center of town after the talks are over.

There are plenty of restaurants near the hotel and near the campus (they are 3 miles apart) and Starbucks near each as well.

We have now closed the hotel reservations through our department. However you can book your own room through the lodging site and they may well give you our group discount for another week or so. If you are planning to attend, and have not registered, please sign up so we have a good count.

We are also taking the final count for speakers. If you have registered and not told us you would like to speak, please email the organizer at jmh@math.unc.edu as soon as possible.

We are pleased that we will have quite a few student speakers this year. The abstracts will be posted as we receive them.

All participants are invited to give talks whose length will be determined by the number of speakers. In addition we will have a few longer talks.

The financial support is generously provided by NSF grant DMS-1301581. Limited travel and lodging financial support will be available to most attendees. However priority will be given to graduate students, post-docs and new Ph.D.s.

NSF DMS-1301581

Posted on November 19th, 2012 by Jane M. Hawkins

Great News - the Carolina Dynamics proposal written by me, Pedrag, and Martin was funded for three years!!! It's a fairly modest level but exactly what we proposed, enough to pay for the locals to get gas money and accommodation for two nights, and to bring in two speakers from North America (flight and accommodation and expenses for 2 - not easily stretched to 3). Very little to nothing beyond that before we get too excited. Also a promise to include grads, some undergrads if possible, and continue to try to diversify participants.

Thanks very very much to those of you who supplied letters of support; it was very helpful and the widespread support from across "the Carolinas" is what pushed us over the top.

The grant will allow us to expand a little beyond what we've been doing.

The date of the 10th annual Symposium is now determined. The conference will be held April 13-15, 2012. The theme of the meeting is the new developments in Dynamical Systems, relations to other branches of mathematics and applications. The conference is an opportunity to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Carolina Dynamical Systems group, to reflect on its humbled origins and on the history of dynamical systems in the Southeast as a whole. The list of invited speakers includes:

The financial support is generously provided by NSF grant DMS-1201546. Limited travel and lodging financial support will be available to the most attendees. However priority will be given to graduate students, post-docs and new Ph.D.s. Due to NSF regulations, we kindly ask all participants to register. There is no fee for registration and no fixed deadline but we would appreciate if people register early so that we can plan accordingly.

Participants who are requesting financial support will also have to do vendor registration required by Clemson university as well as to submit expense report form with receipts.
